The election brouhaha is gone and left in its wake is a lot of misinformation, political drama and looming crisis. I’m a columnist, not necessarily an informed member of the press corp. I research news and I filter the rumours maybe a little better than some, but all in all, we’re all in this ship of information lockdown called Nigeria. Comparison is the only way to confirm success, else a one cattle man might not know he’s lacking unless he be ranked alongside the man with herds of cattle. There’s no perfect system, there’s no one perfect bar none and even the holy bible confirms this, but that doesn’t stop us from striving to do our best which in itself is a reward for a man with morals. Understandably, it is convenient to blame the INEC boss and the Ruling Party for collusion since the way our politics is played, almost all electoral officers, supervisors and arbitrators are fundamentally biased. Though they tell us different, he who pays the piper dictates the tune so it is an open secret that the electoral imbroglio can be traced to one source alone and that is the Federal Government. This is not a Party nor Prof. Jega’s dirty linen that must not be washed in public, but a simple after effect of disorganised, misinformed and an ill prepared Government organising elections. Looking back at the genesis of the election, starting with the ill-timed electoral reforms and voters registration exercise, it takes no real effort for you to realise the Government was out of its depth right from the word Go. Fast forward to May from this junction, let’s not take into account the arson and killings, let’s pay no heed to the terror that would be unleashed and the possibilities of systematic rigging that would take place during the polls proper, what next for a disillusioned electorate that has now realised the ineptitude of its Leaders? Billions of Naira was sunk and many more would exchange hands both legally and behind close doors in ghana_must_go bags, yet we’ve not been shown a positive return on our invested funds and trust. When are we going to have a smoothly ran election without chaos been the trailer, rigging as the preview and court injunctions as the closing credit? When will our information dispersal be up to par? But the question burning on my mind is, is this not an extension given to the irresponsible elements that are hell bent on electoral rigging to thwart the Inspector General police who thought he had severed the unethical interest of his Commissioners in political transition process in their different states by ordering transfers from the top. If bribes can still exchange hands with some few hours notice, then may God save us from an electoral process flushed with cash and enriched commissioners turned to puppets by the purse string of the highest bidder.
Is there any real winner when an umpire is cheering loudly for every goal scored by a participant? Who’s is going to investigate stuffed ballot boxes when the policemen aid this dirty cause?
