Goodluck By D’banj?

Posted on 19 March 2011 by QMarkMag

...

It’s the evening of March 17, 2011. The day is winding to a close but not just yet. All of a sudden, twitter goes agog with news that there will be a ‘pro youth’ interview of the incumbent President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, hosted by the award winning Nigerian artiste, D’banj. This came as an unexpected development to many, with its suddenness and the seeming strategic timing – 8 days before the proposed presidential aspirant’s debate organized by the coalition of Nigerian youth bodies tagged “What About Us?” – slated for the 25th of March. It is not yet clear whether Dr Jonathan has agreed to attend this proposed debate. Many will recall that the Vice President, Mr Namadi Sambo, was absent from the March 11 Vice Presidential aspirant debate organized by the satellite television channel, NN24. The interview, hosted by D’banj, kicked off as planned, and immediately, started to elicit numerous comments and reactions from viewers nationwide. A majority probably disagreed with the ‘kokomaster’s’ involvement in the whole plot, while others commented that he was quite reticent, asking just a few questions, compared with a typical interview host. Through the whole broadcast, it was clear that most technology enabled Nigerian youth (on twitter) were not impressed by the apparent campaign tool.

It is at this point that I attempt to engage in some analysis. My primary focus here is not the content of the interview but its possible strategic purpose. It is obvious that Dr Jonathan and his PDP comrades deployed this interview as a campaign tool targeting Nigerian youth. Despite seeing the move as lame, one cannot ignore the fact that there is a sly and cunning crew developing and implementing political campaign strategies for the ruling party. It looks like so many viewers got carried away with the questionable content and plot of the interview, taking sides and forming opinions about the host, yet, remaining oblivious to the strategy behind the interview and the targeted audience. Who was the target audience? Was it the Nigerian youth? If yes, many will probably condemn the effort concluding that it was unsuccessful in its ploy. Determining whether it was successful or not is hinged on what the intent was, who the real target audience was, and whether the goal was achieved.By extrapolation, it can be deduced that GEJ’s strategists have conducted some form of market segmentation of the youth category, splitting them up into 3 possible groups – the grassroots (masses), the tech-enabled and upwardly mobile, and the apathetic. The grassroots/masses obviously hold the largest market share relative to the others, and it is this group that the campaign has targeted. While the tech enabled and upwardly mobile, twitter and facebook savvy category is busy ramping up support mainly via social media and networking tools, the incumbent is deploying his market penetration tool, via mass marketing.

As if that were not enough, GEJ’s strategists further did a careful selection of his interview host, choosing a well known and musically influential brand – D’banj. His strategist employs the concept of brand extension, to further penetrate this youth mass market at the grassroots, introducing the product – Goodluck by D’banj. Brand extension has successfully favoured many corporate brands in thepast and present, include Courtyard by Marriott, Fourpoints by Sheraton, Polo by Ralph Lauren, to name a few. This forms the second hinge of their campaign strategy – as association of brands to bring the product to the door step of the masses. The impact on the target market? Immeasurable. Even though many upwardly mobile youth still see the whole plot as a sham, they fail to realize that they are not the target. First it was a facebook president, now it’s a ‘youth’ focused president. So, say what you may, the campaign is working, and the product is selling – Goodluck by D’banj! As the political front gets more captivating, it is left for the opposition to play its own card in this battle for the youth market share. Where there are strategies, there can be counter-strategies. Will the opposition launch a more successful product to mass youths at the grassroots? Or will the youth focus be limited to the tech-enabled social networking youth? Will there be an intense tussle over market share? Will there be a battle of the strategists? Whichever way this wind blows, whether it is “Goodluck by D’banj” or “The Opposition by another”, one thing is clear – the youth matter!

‘Why Goodluck Jonathan Was Absent at The NN24′s Presidential Debate’

Posted on 18 March 2011 by Milkman

GEJ

Though the president sent his security details to the organisers to clarify issues relating to the security of the venue ahead of the debate and a security check the evening before the debate started, he still didn’t show up – disappointing Nigerians. Just before, he was heavily criticized for his absence at the Presidential Debate organized by NN24 – his choice to be interviewed by entertainer D’banj earlier was lambasted.

While GEJ turned down invitation, renowned aspirants like Dele Momodu, Chris Okotie and Pat Utomi or any other of the 19 aspirants were not invited by the TV Network. The President GEJ however didn’t attend the NN24 debate because another is being planned by Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) which ‘will have a wider reach… the debate by NN24 did not have wide coverage and reach’ even after he had pledged his attendance, PDP’s director of media and publicity informed.

@ the debate.

However, one of the participant emerged to be eloquent and a better orator than Buhari or Ribadu, Shekarau of the ANPP – trending worldwide on Twitter and the moderator – who is an editor with NEXT Newspaper was the toast of the night. OAP and singer Tosyn Bucknor said via Twitter that: ‘The moderator is impressing me. As a chick, and as someone in the media, I’m watching and learning. No giggles, No fear, just doing her job’ and Storm 360 G.M. and video directors jokily tweeting: @MisterBoulders: The moderator for president jor oh!

Update: A statement released today from the presidency read: “Having only just concluded his tour of the 36 states of Nigeria, President Jonathan has a hectic schedule ahead before the grand finale of the state campaigns at Abuja on March 26, 2011.
The Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation regrets that President Goodluck Jonathan will unavoidably be unable to attend the debate organised by NN24.”

Terry G and His Mom Spend Birthday with Orphans.

Posted on 18 March 2011 by QMarkMag

Uti, Mom, Terry G and company

When Gabriel Amanyi a.k.a Terry G visited the SOS children village in Isolo, Lagos on 17th March, 2011, it was far from a celebrity stunt, the ‘Free Madness’ singer’s visit was to celebrate his birthday with the SOS children.

Terry G and his friends one of which include Uti the Big Brother Africa winner met with the social official in-charge at the village who showed everybody round the village – to the children’s hostels, classrooms and the likes. The children who were so elated to see the role model pay them a visit did not stop chanting his songs and the phrase ‘Testing Microphone’ from the song from his recent album. Accompanied by his mum who Terry G happens to share the same birthday date with, Terry G was proven to have a large heart as he  donated to the kids’ food stuffs, biscuits, snacks, drinks and others, all in large quantities.

Speaking on why he chose to celebrate his birthday at the orphanage, The House of Ginjah boss said ‘God has been good to me and my family in the last one year, this is just my own way of showing appreciation to him. Also I love children and it gives me joy to do things that makes them happy, so it is not just the children who are thrilled to have me around, I am also thrilled to come to their midst and celebrate my birthday with them’.

Terry G is no doubt a famous artiste but who would have thought his fan base extends to children. His exit from the SOS village was a sight to behold as the children came all around him holding his hands and kept waving as his car drove out of the village.

For Terry G, this is of course a birthday like no other.

‘Alfred’ from ‘Batman’ Movies — Dead at 94

Posted on 18 March 2011 by QMarkMag

Michael

Michael Gough — most famous for playing Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth — has died. He was 94.

Gough, who has appeared in more than 150 films over his 65-year career, had been sick for the past year, his agent told the BBC. He was surrounded by family at his home when he died. No cause was released.

“We’ve lost a very treasured and beloved friend and somebody who made a magnificent contribution to the world of theater and films,” the agent told BBC.

Gough was one of only two actors to star in Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin with Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney. (ScreenRant.com points out Pat Hingle is the other.)

In the 1960s, he appeared in TV series The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Saint. Over the next two decades, he was also starred in The Avengers, The Champions and Colditz.

He also starred in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow and voiced characters in Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland.

“Tim Burton was a huge fan of Mick from the Hammer Horror films of the 60s, so he tried very hard to include him in everything he did,” his agent told the BBC.

He is survived by his fourth wife, Henrietta, and children Emma, Simon and Jasper.
