EMMA by Jane Austen

Posted on 27 November 2010 by Husseina Gambo

...

Emma is set in a the slow, quiet parish. Emma Woodhouse is the heroine of this story. Emma is very strong minded lady and this strength sometimes results in a bit of arrogance and high-handedness. She happens to be the star or heroine in her community and everyone looked up to her because she is highly accomplished and from a wealthy and well placed family. This probably accounts for the arrogance and high-handedness.
This story is no different from other Jane Austen books(my love for her books must be apparent by now). This story is about friendship, love, position and other themes that are common in Jane Austen stories which form the bulk of what English community was about two hundred years ago.

Emma lives with her father and until the very opening of the book, with a governess who has become part of the family who has just gotten married. It is well known that Emma never plans to marry partly because of her father and partly because of the earlier mentioned streak of arrogance and her financial security. The readers detects an unspoken belief she holds that no man would be her match.

Their little shire was inhabited by people of varied character Miss Bates, Jane Fairfax, the annoying Mrs Elton, Isabella (Emma’s sister) and of course Emma’s brother in-law George Knightley. There’s also Harriet, Emma’s inferior adopted friend whom she vows to make a lady of yet. Harriet doesn’t know her father and she lives in a boarding house. Quite naturally, Emma assumes she can make her fortune turn around by polishing her up and matching her up with a gentleman. This belief in her match-making abilities is borne from the belief that she matched up her former governess with Mr Weston. All these people come together to form an interesting place and an even more interesting story.

By her association with Emma, Harriet is thrust into the society of people she would ordinarily not mix with. Emma induces Harriet, who by her very nature is quick to agree with others, to reject a likeable merchant’s son whom Harriet likes because Emma thinks him uncouth and unrefined. After an unsuccessful attempt with the local priest Mr Elton, Emma is on the look out for another suitable candidate.

Frank Churchill (Mr Weston’s son from a first marriage) arrives to visit with his father and he immediately strikes up a friendship with Emma. Indeed for a time, anyone watching would suspect something is going on between the two. Their amiability is imminent probably because Frank is like Emma in superiority, position and taste. Indeed Charles’ grandparents from his mother’s side are very rich and he stands as their sole heir, his mother having died. There is a kind of flirting going on between the two of them. Emma is drawn to Frank’s vivacity and like most women, is not totally immune to his flirting. Fortunately, this feeling is only momentary as Emma soon realises she cant possibly be in love with him and hatches to match him up with Harriet.

Meanwhile, Harriet thinks this person Emma has been insinuating likes her is George Knightley. Mr Knitghley happens to be the only person aloof to Emma’s occasional airs. He calls her out when he thinks she is in the wrong and his opinion of her means much to her and she never realises she is in love with him until Harriet mistaken identity is revealed to her. This mistake, and Emma’s realisation of her feelings for Mr Knightley, for breaks up her friendship with Harriet.

In the meantime Charles’ chivalry, flattery and flirting towards Emma is given meaning. He had been engaged to Jane Fairfax in secret all along. Jane Fairfax is the meek, quiet niece of Miss Bates and marrying a man of Charles position is huge for her. This superiority in position of Frank has been the reason for the secrecy because he is afraid his grandmother would not approve. Frank used Emma to shield his relationship with Jane Fairfax. In short, she was a decoy.

Emma learns her lesson in meddling with people’s lives and trying to match-make. At the event she thinks Mr Knitghley is going to inform her of his love for someone else, possibly Harriet, because of Harriet’s account of his behaviour with her which was just kindness on his part because a large part of their group shunned her because of her position in life, he professes undying love for her. Unknown to Emma, he had been in love with her for a long time. Henrietta accepts her merchant’s son. And everything ends well.

Secret engagements are very Jane Austen. Many critics cite Emma as Austen’s least liked story most probably because of Emma’s superior airs and behaviour sometimes is not at all likeable. I ordinarily abhor characters like Emma but till this day, I cannot bring myself to despise her.And the book remains my best Austen even surpassing Pride and prejudice and that is saying much because the whole world seems to think Pride and prejudice her best. I have no explanation for this maybe the mood I was in when I read the book contributed to this (and moods are a major determinant of how well you enjoy a book). An interesting tale!

Posted on 25 November 2010 by Abdulnasir

...

Upcoming singer Ifan who was previously reported to have accused rapper Ice prince of stealing his progression informs in a statement that he was quoted out of context.

“I only made an observation that the progressions from my song and Ice Prince’s Oleku were similar”, he said. “I did have my friends, the Abagas listen to ‘My girl’ then and obviously in some way the song inspired the progression on ‘Oleku’ but that’s music”, He added.

“I’m forced to address it now because of reactions that have followed and to avoid the rumours that my next single produced by SMVA 2010 hit producer of the year, Sossick is a song directed at Ice prince or any of the choc city. There are family”. He included.

His new single ‘bust your head’ would be released soon.

Posted on 25 November 2010 by Dro

Shady Blue

Shady Blue has announced her position as the director of Shady Blue Jeans Ltd a start-up fashion import and Retail Company operating in the UK, whose mission is to become one of the leading and most recognisable designer labels in the Jeanswear & Shape wear industry.

Shady Blue is a successful Nigerian Afro-centric Soulful Jazz singer-songwriter based in the UK, The singer who is passionate about her Music & Fashion explains in a press release made exclusively available to QMArkMag that “there are Many Jean company don’t recognise that women have curves! Curvy women really describes more than one type of figure: the shapely figure that has a high waist to hip ratio, as well as figures that carry a little extra weight on them. Either way, curvy women and curvy girls are getting ever increasing notice today. To be curvy is to be sexy. And curviness isn’t just limited to hips and torso, but curvy butts also are a special group in their own.”

“However, there seems to be a lack of curvy jeans available in the UK. It can be tough at times as many styles today offer a straight-leg and less shapely style around the thighs, buttocks, and smaller waists, Distinguishing between jeans for curvy girls from regular jeans while shopping can be a challenge.” It explained about her reason for starting up a jean line.

Shady Blue says “there has been a lot of chatter as of late regarding the ideal body shape, but what is the ideal waist-to-hip-ratio? Well, there’s no magic number, although you may have heard it was 36-24-36 (inches), or 90-60-90 (cm); but we like this new formula better: curvy + woman = sexy”

Shady Blue Jeans will be available on-line, through a professional and interactive website.
Shady Blue won the 2009 edition of The BEFFTA (Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion, Television and Arts Awards) UK Best Female Act (UK-Africa)
