‘Forever young!’ who doesn’t want to be forever young? The concept of eternity is something we would ALL love to attach to our hearts desires. If it means anything to us, we would not want to watch it fade away.
At the heart of every music act is his love for his music. Regardless of the genre of music played, every artiest dreads to be ever referred to as a “has been”. Even after they die, every act wasn’t to be remembered long after they are gone. So they want to be Bob Marley, Fela, Marvin Gay, Tupac, Biggie, Teddy Pendergrass etc. Gone but forever alive in our heads.
The big question is, what is the key to their longevity? What is it we remember the most about Music greats? The answer is simple. it is “THE THINGS THAT THEY SANG ABOUT. THIER WORDS”.
If that is truly the case, then you would understand why Onyeka’s “dancing in the sun”(released 22yrs ago) occupies a fresher spot in your memory over the artiest called “Jungulist” (hoping you remember the name even though he was hot just 3years ago) with the song “jogodo”.
Appreciation of music strictly on the platform of dance and hype has given us times 50 more hits in the last 5years than we have seen in the 45years before it. But it has also recorded x50 more music stars come and fade away with a record breaking life span of 8months in some cases.
The sworn objective of this group is expose the discomfort felt by millions of end users of this music product and cry out now that the seeming boom of this industry is bound to experience a sudden nose dive if not grounded on the right pedestal. A sincere quest into the current nollywood experience would highlight the need for true substance in the art and the folly of a false sense of confidence built by followership which has proven to be the most unstable and unreliable factor in the entertainment business. For clearance of doubts, go ask Idris Abdulkareem, MC Hammer, Ini Kamozi, Chris Brown, Vanilla Ice and Black Reverends.
It is against this background that we sadly announce the death of the writing pad. Its terminal illness began about 3years ago. Dbanj clearly warned that music in Nigeria has gotten to a stage where he doesn’t have to make sense on a record and gave us an example of what he could say when he said ” $@@%*>:”^&%#@!$#%$#%^^&*&*% ” . I knew then that a new form of lyrical composition had been born but was at a loss of words of what it should be called. Just before i got a chance to crack my head for a name, Terry G christens it with the name FREE MADNESS and makes an official anthem off the style. With a classic arrangement of jargon for your listening pleasure.
Now i was sure we were in trouble and that this was about to be institutionalized going by the copy a hit trend. As i was yet in thought, another monstrous hit drops and this time my home boy W Ceezay was chanting with absolute incoherence, with some Ghanian group. It was amazing but hey! who cares, the song sweet. The back of the Carmel now received the final blow with a listen to Timayas new album. Now 2 different songs flaunts the final demise of the writing pad with a loud yell “Ï no dey write anything anymore” . I am guessing that’s where you graduate to after being the one who “make many artiest go back to dem sit. WRITE BETA rhymes and do beta beat”
With songs like ‘Only me’ from 2face “2010″ from Sound Sultan and “óne day” from Eldee, i see that some wish for a resurrection.
Let’s watch it unfold as i urge you to watch this space as a renewed zeal to expose ignorance has received a new fire. Your candid opinions and criticism of our effort in doing this is also welcome.
