50 Cent’s back in fighting shape — and his new feud is with fat

Posted on 29 June 2010 by QMarkMag

50 Cent.

Call him “Fitty” Cent! Fighting childhood obesity and keeping kids physically active is a cause that literally hits home for rapper Curtis “50 Cent“ Jackson. “My little boy has got a little weight on him, so now’s he got a personal trainer — but he wouldn’t have a personal trainer if I wasn’t in the financial space that I was in,” 50 told In Touch at his nonprofit youth group G-Unity Foundation’s “Forever Young Day” in Baisley Pond Park in his hometown of Jamaica, Queens, New York. “But It just make me more conscious of it. I think it’s just the times: The technology is making them more comfortable sitting there playing video games and watching television. They should do things that more physical. They should go out and meet people instead of going on a social network all the time. They’re conditioned to look at a photograph and say ‘Make me your friend.’” Interestingly, the rapper’s fitness mission comes at a time when he’s trying to put on weight, after losing 54 pounds in nine weeks after going on a liquid diet to play a football player diagnosed with cancer in Things Fall Apart. “I just want to get the weight back and I’ve got to do it all the way right. I’m eating everything comfortably because I had just went through a process of nine weeks of of depriving myself of even the basic foods. So I wanted a lot of different things — like Mexican food and burritos — that I had an urge for. “ The results are starting to show, as the rapper is rapidly adding muscle following his drastic drop from 214 pounds to 160. “I’m back training, so I work out for like 45 minutes at the gym, four times a week. I do different kinds of work, some plyometrics, a lot of weight training now because I’m trying to put weight back on. I’m pretty fit, because your appearance is a big part of staying interesting to people.” His startling appearance after his weight loss was certainly interesting, making headlines on behalf of Things Fall Apart, an upcoming movie which which is another passionate cause for 50. “It’s more personal than other project I’ve been involved with because my best friend growing up died of cancer,” he reveals. “One out of eight people in the world die of cancer. If not me and you, somebody we know will die of cancer. Considering that cancer tops HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis together, I think it’s very relevant.” – In Touch Weekly

Madonna’s Youthful Ssecret.

Madonna’s Youthful Ssecret.

Madonna

Known as much for her age-defying looks as her music or upcoming Material Girl clothing line, Madonna and her beauty secrets are the focus of global speculation. How does she do it? One secret may be her young lover, Jesus Luz, whose home country of Brazil is a land steeped in beauty secrets. In fact, Brazilian news websites this week buzzed with speculation that Madonna was soon to consult Brazil’s world renowned Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, whose Rio de Janeiro clinic is an elite beauty haven, offering masterful surgery and top-of-the-line creams, ointments and serums (the line is available in the U.S. at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman under the Beauty by Clinica Ivo Pitanguy brand). Perhaps creams, not diamonds, are a girl’s best friend. –

Mike Adenuga And Wife Become Nigeria’s Newest Fugitives.

Posted on 29 June 2010 by QMarkMag

Mike Adenuga

In the same path James Ibori took before he was arrested, Mike Adunga is reported by The Will Nigeria to have made himself a fugitive: Just like the fugitive former governor of Bauchi State, Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu who fled Nigeria more than two years ago and his Delta State counterpart, Chief James Ibori, who also fled Nigeria to the Emirati via Accra before his detention by Dubai police, THEWILL can report that Globacom Chairman, billionaire and oil magnate, Otunba Mike Adenuga has fled the shores of Nigeria for good to escape interrogation and possible prosecution.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had sought to interrogate Adenuga and his second wife, Titi in connection with its investigation into the 17.5 million euro Siemens bribery scandal.

Adenuga had written the anti-graft agency claiming that he was part of the federal government delegation to South Africa to attend the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup soccer competition and that he would make himself available to operatives of the agency as soon as the assignment was over.

THEWILL checks at the Office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has however revealed that Adenuga was not on the federal government delegation. According to a circular obtained from the office, those on the list included Senate President David Mark (head of delegation), Governor Bukola Saraki (Kwara State); Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta State); Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers State); Sports Minister, Isa Bio; Youth Development Minister, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi; Women Affairs Minister, Mrs. Josephine Anenih; Information and Communications Minister, Dora Akunyili, and former football federation secretary, Sani Toro, who served as secretary.

The federal government delegation to South Africa has since returned to Nigeria including other government officials, state governors, legislators and businessmen who trooped to South Africa to watch early matches. In fact, the Nigerian Super Eagles has officially left South Africa after they failed to qualify for the round of 16 but Otunba Mike Adenuga has deliberately stayed away from Nigeria.

One of Adenuga’s friends who opted to remain anonymous said the billionaire has no plans of honouring the EFCC invitation.

“Mike has gone underground. He won’t meet with the EFCC, he used the world cup as an excuse to buy some time but the Super Eagles early elimination exposed his plan,” the source said.

THEWILL called Adenuga’s number severally to know when he would meet with EFCC officials but all our calls were unanswered while our SMS was not acknowledged.

EFCC spokesman Mr. Femi Babafemi confirmed in a conference call that Adenuga has not been interrogated by the agency.

Mike Adenuga

Last week, the commission interrogated two Executive Directors of Globacom telecommunications company, Mrs. Gladys Alabi and Mr. Mike Jitubo in its investigation into the 17.5 million euro bribery scandal.

The commission also grilled former Legal Adviser Ministry of Finance Mrs. Agbamuche, former Legal Adviser Nigerian Telecommunications (NITEL) Daba Jubrin and a former NITEL employee R. Olusanju on June 18, 2010.

Siemens Managing Director, Mr. Alain?DeCat; Siemens General Manager Finance & Accounts, Mr. Tunde Orija; Managing Director C. Woermann Nig. Ltd, Ralf Henrich; and Chief Accountant C. Woermann Nig. Ltd, Mr. Olusegun Olaniyi; three former Communication Ministers, Dr. Haliru Bello Mohammed, Deputy National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Retired Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju and Chief Cornelius Adebayo have all been interrogated by the commission.

C. Woermann Nigeria Limited, a German mechanical consulting firm is alleged to have handled the disbursement of brides to Nigeria officials.

Globacom in statement following the news of Adenuga’s invitation declared that the company is not in any way involved in the Siemens bribery scam.

The telecommunications company said that the only relationship it ever had with Siemens, as a private company, was when it awarded a single contract in 2003 to the German firm for the provision of GSM and broad access infrastructure in some parts of the country. The company it stated was also awarded part of the National Fibre Backbone Infrastructure, which has since been completed.

The company added that since Siemens executed the contract, Globacom has not engaged the telecommunication equipment manufacturing company for any other project.

“It should be noted that the equipment supply and installation contract forms the basis of the only relationship that Globacom has had with Siemens. It was and remains a normal business interaction that was entered into by Globacom purely to meet its network expansion needs. Globacom has had no other form of relationship or dealings with Siemens, the statement noted.

Adenuga, who also owns controlling shares in Equitorial Trust Bank Plc (ETB), Conoil, and other business interests was first arrested at his Okeowo Victoria Island, Lagos residence on Sunday, July 09, 2006, after the businessman refused to honour several invitations to appear at the commission’s office for questioning following its investigation into the questionable deposits of Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) funds into Equitorial Trust Bank. Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former vice president was alleged to have approved the deposits.

The then Nuhu Ribadu led EFCC in a statement justifying Adenuga’s arrest said, “EFCC visited Chief Adenuga’s home on Sunday, 9th July 2006, only after several invitations to him, over a period of more than three months.? He refused to honour the invitations.

“Even at his Victoria Island, Lagos home, for over seven hours, Adenuga, among other evasive tactics employed by his family and staff, refused to see EFCC operatives or allow them entry;

“The 14 operatives (not “over 40″ or “over 70″ as reported in the media) had no choice than to extract Chief Adenuga in a professional manner, with due respect for his rights as a citizen of Nigeria and in accordance with established rules and regulations.? Consequently, no injury was done to his person or damage to his property.

“Chief Adenuga was subsequently taken to our Ikoyi, Lagos offices where he answered questions in relation to EFCC investigations.? He was released on bail immediately after.

“The Commission’s investigation of Chief Mike Adenuga has certain international dimensions that EFCC may not be in a position to make public at this stage.? But, once the Commission has reached a comfortable point in its inquiry, everything would be made public;

“It must be emphasized however, that EFCC’s invitation to and interaction with Chief Adenuga is normal.? No crime has been established against him.? He is innocent until proven otherwise.? However, the Commission wishes to reiterate that no one is above the law.”

It is unclear whether the commission would formally declare Mr. and Mrs. Adenuga wanted if they fail to submit themselves to operatives of the commission for interrogation.

The Super Eagles Exit Vs The House Fracas On The Same Day.

Posted on 29 June 2010 by QMarkMag

Kaita's Situation

I found it quite interesting that the exit of the Super Eagles happened on the same day as the now legendary fight in the House of Representatives. It was even more eye catching for me because the members of the number of  House, found to be involved in the brawl and subsequently suspended, is 11; the same number of players that get to participate in a football game.

Like I had pointed out last week, some people were still very hopeful about Nigeria’s qualification for the second round of the World Cup. I could not care less at that point. As much as I would have loved for us to go through, it just felt a little unfair to expect to go through with the sort of approach we had taken to the whole tournament, and our attitude to the first two games. Of course I screamed and jumped on my seat when we scored our 2 goals against South Korea and also used words (that cannot be printed) against Yakubu and Martins when they missed those clear cut chances that even Hon. Doris Uboh would have scored while wearing her heels and that nice purple and green outfit she wore on the day of the House of Reps fight.

I half prepared myself already for our exit from the tournament after that loss to Greece; so when it was finally official, the pain and embarrassment was something I could brush aside. I believe a lot in not crying over spilt milk, especially when the milk was either rotten, or was knocked over intentionally. It could not be as bad as the way I felt after the game with Greece, where I had bragged and put on my Nigerian jersey with pride; only to walk back home not even with my tail between my legs, but completely without a tail. That was a hard day.

But in spite of the brave face I had decided to put up after our exit, my heart sank even further when Ghana qualified for the second round. By most accounts, Ghana had a tougher group than we did. They also had a less star studded team than we had. They are also our biggest rivals in football. While most people would not be so bothered by an Algeria or South Africa doing well, watching a team like the Black Stars, (who are only participating in their 2nd World Cup ever), do better than us, was a bitter pill to swallow.

It was a mix of emotions; pride that at least one African team was able to do well; but pain that it had to be Ghana and not Nigeria.

The Eagles have flown out of South Africa now and there is talk about retaining the coach. Most players seem to agree with that proposition. Some have voiced their opposition to his retention, especially since they did not get enough play time at the tournament. Many, like Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Sani Kaita, have become the butt of jokes not just by Nigerians but across the world. Videos of their goal miss and foul respectively, have become huge internet hits on sites like YouTube. Kaita’s tackle for example, was the most watched video on YouTube as at last weekend, with about 2 million views in less than 2 days. Of course, all the comments from viewers of the video were all meant to ridicule Nigeria and rightly so. Even the Americans, whom we used to laugh at for their poor approach to football, have not spared Nigeria. Just before the game against South Korea started, ESPN’s panel of analysts predicted a win for South Korea over “the Super Turkeys”. I felt very offended that they would take a national symbol and turn it to a point of ridicule. But then again, what had the team done to disprove that they were not just heavy turkeys unable to fly off the ground?

The day had gone according to my expectations, with Nigeria’s exit and I knew that 140 million opinions would instantly be expressed as a result. Nigerians would scream for a new coach, others would want the team disbanded and overhauled. Some would want to tear down the NFF. These are all things we see and hear whenever we do badly at a tournament. Every Nigerian becomes a coach and no one waited till the next day to vent.

But what I did not expect that day was the fight at the House of Representatives. I must admit though that as much as it was shameful to watch, it was nothing new. Nigerian legislators have brought more shame to Nigerians since the advent of democracy, than even the Super Eagles will ever dream of. If they are not fighting, they are passing laws that have no bearing on the populace; or bringing in bags of money to display right beside the Mace; or collecting bribes without caring who is hurt as a result. The list of shameless display is endless.

Interestingly, the images of the fight have become an internet hit on YouTube as well and I must confess, I have watched it every day since Wednesday. It makes me laugh more out of pity for the families of those whose parents or uncles and aunties decided to ridicule themselves so badly. I also laugh because all of this is happening in a year when we should be celebrating our golden jubilee as a nation. We have heard of budgets of about N10billion for this ‘Nigeria at 50? party and I only wonder who we are deceiving when we cannot even have a house of so called ‘Honourable’ members behaving honourably.

What I found most laughable was a story in the papers a few days later with the headline; “Reps Condemn Rising Violence in Nigeria”. I could not stop laughing when I read the story. The same House members who only 2 days earlier, had made Samuel Peter look like a joke, were now condemning ethnic and religious hostilities across the country. The only thing that can ever be funnier than that is for the Super Eagles to condemn Cameroun for doing badly at the World Cup.

In what should make for a very interesting meeting, the National Assembly has now decided to probe the performance of the Super Eagles at the World Cup. It would be a case of pot calling kettle black and removing the spec in the Super Eagles’ eye, when the eye of the House is almost blind with ‘poto poto’. Is it not clear that no one will take them seriously anymore? Some things cannot be pretended about. That ‘Honourable’ tag, which we only use in Nigeria anyways, is supposed to be earned not by election but by conduct. You do not go about tearing each others’ shirts today in front of the whole world, then talk about punishing others for tearing their own shirts the next day. Do they not think that they owe Nigerians and those whom they represent, an apology for constantly bringing shame to the nation?

It has been a very tough week for Nigerians and our ‘shock absorbers’ continue to help us stay somewhat sane. Ours is a country where almost nothing is impossible as news like this which would almost cause national disasters elsewhere, are swept aside very easily in Nigeria.

For the Supper Eagles, soon there will be probe panels and the coach will either be sacked or retained. But true to character, we would be in the same clueless situation by the 2014 World Cup. It is just the way we are. We just never learn from history. We are experts at knowing what to do (and that dates back to every tournament that we have gone wrong); but actually doing those things, is where the problem lies. Will Lagerback even if retained, still be coach by 2014? You and I know that it is almost impossible. Will Amodu make another comeback? Well, do not bet against it. This is Nigeria.
As for the House of Representatives, Warri talk say; “Old man wey mess think say na people wey smell the mess dey suffer pass; forget say na him own belle still dey purge.” They may be shaming Nigeria today but the pain and embarrassment is definitely theirs. God dey!

Joke Chukwuma Upgrade To Party and Chicky.

Posted on 29 June 2010 by Dro

Cyril Chukwumah

The relatively modest and sinfully beautiful wife Joke  of Cyril Chukwuma -  Bank PHB managing director has transformed into a fashion/trend conscious and almost boastful wife.

The lady, prior to the appointment of her husband by CBN governor Sanusi Lamido to clear the mess at Bank PHB and to rescue the bank from imminent collapse, Joke was another  woman whose sense of dressing epitomised modesty. Her simplicity was a point of reference to many ladies who court unfussiness in their looks and posture.

Today, the lady has changed her ways as she now struts around like a cocky peacock just set loose from captivity. She has now embraced public functions appearance and she is putting everything into launching herself back to the chic scene flaunting various design  from  numerous designer outfit. She has now made the chic scene her nub.

She hardly engages in conversations with her friends without making reference to her husband’s appointment by the CBN governor. and one would be surprised if she urges her husband to create an office for the post of ‘The Wife of the MD’. How quickly can life transform one?

In another Report,  Bank PHB might be sold in August as the CBN Governor informed in an interview with Bloomberg in Basel, Switzerland. Sanusi said he expects three foreign banks, a couple of private equity firms and local lenders to submit bids for the eight rescued banks [Bank PHB, Oceanic and three other banks] by August.

First Wife, Laide Speak On Romance With Wole Soyinka.

Posted on 29 June 2010 by QMarkMag

Soyinka

One thing that has not been written about Wole Soyinka is the woman/women in this life even a Lagos based newspaper that had advertised a story to celebrate his 70th birthday   never published the story.

Wole Soyinka remains the first Blackman to receive the prestigious Nobel Laurel in this discipline.

“Don’t ask me about Wole Soyinka,” Laide Soyinka said with a note of finality. “I am not going to talk about Wole Soyinka. Or, am I Wole Soyinka? If you want a story about Wole Soyinkia, go to Wole Soyinka and interview him. As for me, no way! I am not going to say a word. I won’t talk about Wole Soyinka.”

She recalled her encounter with Dele Momodu (Publisher of Ovation magazine), who as an editor with Weekend Concord, Nigeria’s highly successful first Saturday newspaper, cornered the lady for a world-exclusive interview. “Dele Momodu told me he wanted to do an interview on me as a woman of substance,” said Chief Laide Soyinka, “but, he ended up doing such an elaborate thing on me and Wole Soyinka. No, I won’t allow you do the same thing this time around. You won’t get me like Dele Momodu did.

If you want to do a story on Wole Soyinka, go to Wole Soyinka and interview him. As for me, I am not ready and I am not going to talk about Wole Soyinka.”

Ask her how she feels about the Nobel Laureate, and her response comes tumbling out with the speed of light. “Of course, I love him,” she said. “How do you marry somebody you don’t love? Indeed, I love him. I admire him. It was this affection between us that led to the marriage. How could I have married someone I don’t admire?”

If there was one moment when Soyinka’s elderly wife ever felt proud of her husband, it was when the famous professor received the celebrated Nobel Laurel award in Stockholm, Sweden, 1986, just when an equally famous Nigerian journalist, Dele Giwa, first Editor-In-Chief of Newswatch magazine, was bombed out of life through the infamous letter bomb. “That was the crowning glory of his literary achievements,” said Chief (Mrs.) Laide Soyinka. “That was the international stamp of authority that he is the King of Literature in Africa, indeed, in the Black World.”

She then traced the genesis of the romance between her and the Nobel Laureate to the good old days in the University College, Ibadan, UCI, where they met for the first time. “We met at the University College, Ibadan,” she said. “I had been admitted to read Arts.”

She explained that Professor Soyinka was a contemporary of the late Health Minister, Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, both of whom were years ahead of her in the academia. She also related that her husband didn’t finish his Bachelors programme at UCI, since the college had not been upgraded to the level of a full-fledged university at that time. “University College, Ibadan had facilities for intermediate and not full degree,” she continued. “So, Wole didn’t complete his full degree programme at Ibadan, he went over to Leeds to do that.”

Along with academic pursuits, there was a flourish of romance at the premier university, where a good number of successful Nigerians met their spouses. For instance, she said, Professor Chinua Achebe got his heartthrob, Christiana, from the University College, Ibadan, just when Professor Wole Soyinka was wooing her. “Christy (Achebe) and I were colleagues at U.I.,” she said. “We both resided at Queen Elizabeth Hall. Christy was a lovely girl, very pretty girl and my good friend.

“All the people who later became important in Nigeria had attended the University College, Ibadan at that time. One of such people is Gamaliel Onasode, who read Classics, and Emeka Anyaokwu, I think, he also read Classics. So, also did late (Chief) Bola Ige. At that time, Onasode was boyfriend to Bimpe (Aboyade). Although Onasode didn’t end up marrying Bimpe because he dumped her for another girl from his hometown. It was later that late Professor Ojetunji Aboyade came. She found Professor Aboyade agreeable and got married to him.

“So, it was a community where the who’s who in Nigeria today blossomed in romance of undergraduate days. There was also Emmanuel Ifeajuna, who was eventually killed in the coup affairs. His own girlfriend was Rose. There was this gentleman who was killed by Ogoni people, whose wife was a sister to Ken Saro-Wiwa’s wife. He was Edward Kobani. He was fondly called Eddy. They were all there. Although, they were my seniors, they were my brother’s colleagues, Olu Akaraogun. So, a whole lot of notable Nigerians picked their future partners from the University College, Ibadan. So, Wole and I were also caught in this fever of romance.”

She noted that Professors Soyinka and the late Olikoye Ransome-Kuti were cousins and enjoyed some kind of intimate relationship, which rubbed off on the rapport, which their families enjoyed. “My grandchildren would call him Uncle Koye, because of the familiarity,” she further revealed. “But, he didn’t mind, although this would not be tolerated in Yoruba culture.”

Wole’s marriage to Laide was truncated by the former’s incarceration, which put the onerous responsibility of keeping the home front on the shoulders of the latter. It was a tough time, though. There was a risky incident during the Nigerian civil war, when Chief Laide Soyinka had a close shave when she was involved in an encounter with a drunken soldier. Unknown to the errant soldier, Jimi Johnson, one of Wole Soyinka’s loyalists was nearby, and he came to the rescue of the woman. “Do you want to kill her?” Johnson asked, daring the gun-trotting soldier. “Don’t you know she is my master’s wife?” Such was Jimi Johnson’s loyalty to Wole Soyinka that he was easily recognised as a member of the Soyinka family.

When Soyinka picked a professorial job at the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife), it fell on Laide’s lot, once again, to take total care of the home front, and Professor Olumide Awe, Soyinka’s school days’ friend and colleague in Pyrates’ Fraternity, remarked in his book: Before My Very Eyes, that the credit for Soyinka’s phenomenal literary genius that earned him the Nobel Laurel should go to Laide who took the domestic burden totally off Wole’s shoulders.

It is equally important to note that while Soyinka was conquering the literary world, Laide, his wife, took care of all Soyinka’s children, an attribute which–in the eyes of close observers–won her the title of “Unsung Heroine.”

Although Chief (Mrs.) Laide Soyinka was more into university administration than traditional affairs, she was adorned with the chieftaincy title of Iyalode of Omu-Ijebu. “It is an honour,” she said. “Being adorned the Iyalode is an honour. After all, Iyalode is Oba Obirin (a female equivalent of a king.).

She mentioned that in this capacity, she is given the task of taking care of the female folks, representing them before the Oba, and taking care of developments in the town. Of course, she had been outstanding in contributing to the growth and progress of her people on the platform of Omu-Ijebu Community Development Council. More importantly, she had taken active interest in the affairs of indigenes of Omu-Ijebu while serving as Librarian to Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University). “One took care of interests of natives from Omu-Ijebu, taking care of their admission and academic progress,” she said. “It is the totality of these contributions that influenced the honour of traditional chieftaincy title.” It would be recalled that Chief (Mrs.) Laide Soyinka served both University of Ibadan and Olabisi Onabanjo University for a total of 36 years.
