Nigerian Youths Decry INEC Unpreparedness

Posted on 28 May 2010 by QMarkMag

EnoughisEnough

- Demand An Immediate Commencement Of New Voter Registration.

EnoughisEnough Nigeria, the coalition of Nigerian youths and youth-led
organizations, is compelled to publicly highlight what it has observed as
the total lack of preparedness on the part of the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver free and fair polls for the 2011
General Elections.

Hence, the coalition is calling on the President and Commander-in-Chief of
the Federal Republic, Goodluck Jonathan, to show quick and tangible
results on his promise to deliver free and fair elections in 2011 by
ensuring that INEC starts new voter registration nationwide as quickly as
possible.

“We have made repeated visits to the INEC offices in Lagos and Abuja,”
said Cheta Nwanze, one of the coalition’s spokesperson. “And at each
level, we have been shocked by the level of complete abandon that is the
lot of our electoral system at the moment.”

The coalition is disappointed to note that the registration of new voters,
an exercise that should be continuous by law, and should at least have
become a national drive a month ago, is yet to commence. There is, hence,
a real danger that millions of new voters will be systematically
disenfranchised.

“This is unacceptable,” said Hadiza Mohammed. “If we are not registering
yet less than eight months to such important elections, what kind of
fairness do we expect from the process?”

With these concerns in view, the coalition therefore calls on President
Goodluck Jonathan to show some real commitment and sincerity, beyond words
and promises, to the electoral process by working with INEC to facilitate
the immediate commencement of the New Voters Registration Exercise. More
importantly, let the exercise be open and transparent so that Nigerians
know exactly what is going on rather than the present situation of rumours
and suspicions. We are requesting that this process starts as soon as
possible to give adequate time to register new voters; clean up the Voters
Register and execute a comprehensive communication campaign to educate
Voters on the process and their rights. This is to ensure that all
eligible Nigerians are able to participate in the process.

The coalition is also calling on the President to expedite action and
appoint the Chairman and other National Commissioners at INEC.

“Let them be put on notice that if this kind of tardiness, which is
dangerous for our much-talked-about electoral reforms continue,” Nwanze
said, “young people across Nigeria might have no choice but to take stern
measures to pressure the government to take the right steps.”

The EnoughisEnough Nigeria coalition is a civic participation group for
young Nigerians that has organised protest rallies against ineffective
governance, in Abuja and Lagos. The coalition is committed to ensuring
that the youth vote – from the grassroots to the Ivory Towers – counts in
the 2011 elections,  working closely with grassroots mobilisers, and
national and international election observers. To this end, the coalition
is beginning Voter Education workshops across the country for Nigerian
youth.

Member organizations include The Future Project, Paradigm Initiative
Nigeria, Omotola Youth Empowerment Project, Light Up Nigeria, Rise
Networks, BLING Corp, Chocolate City, Brand It Nigeria, and the Abira
Foundation.

Fans Frown At NGN1,000 Price Tag For Tuface’s Unstoppable II Album.

Tuface

Tuface’s new CD was announced to be a history making and game changing initiative considering the amount of work and money to put into an album project. The former price of a hundred and fifty naira was said to be in no way profitable.

Hence, Tuface and his management as we exclusive reported months back  would have the international edition for his ‘Unstoppable’ album which is on sale now sell for a thousand naira. The CD in addition to audio tracks would have video, pictures and wallpaper.

We are tired of pirates selling our intellectual properties at ridiculous prices.” Tuface’s manager reportedly gave as reason for the new price.

There are indications that fans are not adjusting to the new price and expressing their displeasure over the CD’s price. In some situation, abusive.

“The question remains is hiking the price a solution? An average fan doesn’t not see the problem of CD pricing and pirates. Hence the frown at the one thousand naira price but we would just have to wait and see what happens at the end and I see a low price version of the CD coming”, a radio commentator said.

Fans who are not happy about the ‘high’ price are also operating a Facebook group called Nigerians say NO to Tuface Idibia selling his album for N1,000. The reason for the group as stated is “ to make an awareness, concerning the outrageous decision by a popular artist in Nigeria called 2face selling his latest Album for 1000 Naira, considering the hardship in Nigeria, and knowing full well an average Nigerian cannot afford to buy it, what becomes of them?

‘What becomes of people who can’t afford to buy Tuface’s album for 1, 000 naira?’ is a question a blogger posed. An insider inform that more artistes would be following suit and the question again is: Is N1, 000 not too expensive for an album? or the artistes and labels would consider a low price edition months after release of the deluxe version?

The 31 years old Swizz Beats who has two children from his marriage from previous relationship with R n B singer, Mashonda filed for divorce last summer where he claimed his divorce has nothing to do with relationships with Alicia Keys. Mashonda claimed that Alicia Keys broke up her marriage which was going on fine when she replied a tweet posted by alicia keys on twitter asking “in love, is it better to go for the choice that is smart or the choice that has spark?” as Mashonda replies ‘my concern with Alicia Keys is no longer the fact that she assisted in destroying a family but she has the audacity to make these selfish comments about love and wanting to be with someone even after knowing their situation Mashonda later answered her question “sparks burn everyone, be smart- john kennedy.”

John Legend Says His Best Fans Are In South Africa

Posted on 28 May 2010 by Shola Syno

John Legend dancing with female fans

Grammy-winning US singer John Legend is looking forward to performing before his favourite fans when he takes the stage in South Africa on June 10 for the official soccer World Cup concert.

The 31-year-old will be one of a long lineup of African and global music stars singing at the Orlando stadium in Soweto, South Africa’s biggest black township, a day before the month-long soccer tournament kicks off.

“I love coming to South Africa,” Legend said in a telephone interview.

“My fans there are some of my best fans around the world.

“Actually they are my best fans, they give me such energy, they sing along to everything, and it’s such a great vibe every time I have been there.”

Legend is expected to be joined by the likes of Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas and Shakira along with African acts including Angelique Kidjo, BLK JKS, Hugh Masekela and Tinariwen at what is being billed as one of the continent’s biggest ever concerts.

Organisers have included local as well as global stars for the gig amid concerns that South African music would not be fairly represented at the high-profile concert.

Legend said he aimed to collaborate with regional artists at the gig, proceeds from which will go to 20 Centres for 2010, FIFA’s official social campaign for the World Cup aimed at positive change in Africa through football.

“I don’t want to spill all the beans now, I want it to be more of a surprise when we get there, but we certainly will be collaborating with some African artists,” Legend said.

“I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be a great, great concert.

“It’s a great event for South Africa to be able to host the first African World Cup, and then for the whole world to be watching and the seeing the progress South Africa has gained,” he added.

“I think it (the gig) is … really a way for music to bring everybody together, just like sport brings everybody together.”

US SOCCER INTEREST RISING

Legend said he believed the 2010 World Cup would help promote soccer in the United States, where, despite signs of progress, it is still a long way behind baseball, basketball and American football in terms of popularity.

“I think a lot of sports fans in America may be paying attention more than they ever had before,” he said, adding that US television coverage had helped generate interest.

“I think it’s cool, soccer is something that kids play in America but it has not been a popular professional sport, but I think it is growing in popularity now.”

Asked which country he would be supporting, he replied:

“Well, you know I’m an American, so I’m going to root for my home team. I know we are an underdog anyway, so it’s probably not mostly likely that we will win, but I hope they do well.”

The United States is grouped with Algeria, England and Slovenia in the first phase of the tournament. The United States and England get the group under way on June 12.

“I am hoping to watch the US-England match and I think I am going to go see the South Africa-Mexico (June 11) match as well,” Legend said.
